MILWAUKEE – Wisconsin retirees expressed their outrage after GOP Senate nominee Eric Hovde called for raising the Social Security retirement age.
“Wisconsinites of all ages should be appalled by Eric Hovde’s call to raise the retirement age,” said Ross Winklbauer, President of the Wisconsin Alliance. “This position shows that he does not understand the needs of working people. He is unfit to serve in the United States Senate.”
“Raising the retirement age is an affront to every person in Wisconsin who has paid into Social Security with every paycheck, regardless of their age. If the full retirement age were raised from 67 to 69, the median-wage retiree would lose thousands of dollars in benefits they have paid for and earned.”
Analysts have calculated that increasing the full retirement age would slash benefits for nearly three-quarters of Americans and threaten low- and moderate-income workers with economic insecurity once they leave the workforce.
“And what about workers who are unable to perform strenuous physical labor at a later age?” Winklbauer added. “This is one more reason that we need to return Tammy Baldwin to the Senate.”
“A much better idea is to make millionaires like Eric Hovde pay their fair share into the system, so we can afford to increase benefits across the board and ensure Social Security is there for future generations,” he concluded.
Winklbauer urged Wisconsin seniors to do their research before voting in the November elections.
