Retiree Leader Condemns Plan to Run Social Security with a Part-Time Commissioner

The Alliance for Retired Americans blasted the Trump Administration’s decision to appoint Social Security Administration (SSA) Commissioner Frank Bisignano as CEO of the Internal Revenue Service — a move that will have him essentially lead both massive agencies at once.

“Every American who has paid into Social Security should be outraged,” said Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance. “Running the Social Security Administration is a full-time job. Treating the job as a side gig insults every worker and retiree who depends on their earned benefits.

“Americans pay for the workers and administration of the agency through their Social Security withholdings in every paycheck. We expect a full-time commissioner for our money. Instead, we’re now getting a part-time commissioner drawing a full salary from our Social Security taxes.

“This Administration has already thrown the SSA into chaos. Since January they have cut thousands of staff members and replaced them with glitchy AI chatbots and forced seniors to wait months for basic services,” Fiesta continued. “Now, instead of fixing the mess, they’re giving Bisignano another job.”

“Rather than honoring his promise to Congress to be a full-time commissioner, Mr. Bisignano is being tasked to run the day to day operations of an entirely different agency by Treasury Secretary Bessent. This asinine move will also leave the IRS without a full-time, Senate confirmed leader.

“The Alliance calls on every Member of Congress who cares about the Social Security system, Democrat and Republican, to demand that the President nominate a full-time IRS Commissioner. If they allow this reckless decision to stand, retirees will remember who failed to stand up for Social Security.”
