WASHINGTON – From Connecticut to California, retiree activist members of the Alliance for Retired Americans are rallying at more than 50 events to demand that Congress and the Trump Administration protect and strengthen Social Security as the program marks its 90th anniversary.
“For 90 years, Social Security has been a sacred promise between the American people and their government — that after a lifetime of work, you will be able to retire with dignity. Through wars, recessions, and national crises, Social Security has never missed a payment,” said Richard Fiesta, executive director of the Alliance for Retired Americans.
“We should be celebrating today, but we can’t because the future of Social Security is at risk. This administration has slashed the Social Security Administration’s workforce, making it harder for Americans to get information about their benefits and file claims. The president has fueled a disinformation campaign to weaken public confidence in the program, and leaders in both Congress and the administration are talking about privatizing Social Security and raising the retirement age.”
“Americans work a lifetime to earn guaranteed benefits, and we will not take these attacks lying down,” Fiesta continued. “We are demanding that Congress fully staff Social Security Administration field offices so people can receive high-quality service from a human being, not a machine; protect the sensitive personal data held by the SSA; and require the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share into the system so it will remain strong for current and future generations.”
Local Alliance activists are holding events in more than 18 states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
